Responsibilities
- The Film Programmer works with the larger programming team on the curation, stakeholder relationships, print research and administration for all the film programming in theater and contribute to the film programming at home, Q&A’s and events, and printed materials
- This involves collaboration with film distributors, studios and rightsholders, film archives, filmmakers and producers, curators and other institutions
- The role includes film programming and print research, project management, film industry liaison work and stakeholder management
- The role reports to the Director of Programming
- The Film Programmer works within the Programming Department on the delivery of several calendars concurrently
- Program 7 Ludlow Street Theater – Theater 1 and Theater 2 (35mm / 16mm / digital) with series and one-off titles within the brand spirit of Metrograph which includes an emphasis on repertory programming, combined with select new first runs films, all with a focus on in-person talent appearances and premieres
- Identify and develop new potential programming format ideas – including short form and interactive viewing events
- Engage audiences and provide context for programming
- The selected candidate will be responsible for directly engaging with our customers, members, and followers by providing context for our diverse and complex programming
- This involves our programming both in the theater and At Home, as well as across social media platforms
- The role will include promoting, explaining, and enriching the audience’s understanding of our events through various formats, such as: Program introductions, Leading talks and Q&A sessions, be the face of videos and podcasts, Social media posts, interviews and articles
- Communication and presentation
- Present and communicate (in bi-weekly meetings) not only the programming but the ideas and enthusiasm behind it to our marketing, social, publicity, and editorial teams helping them build strategies, narratives, assets, and content to effectively promote our screenings, series, and titles, our excitement around them, and what makes them so special
- Work with, and edit as needed the on call freelance Writer who will draft all blurbs, to ensure that blurbs and language are on brand and achieving Programming’s intention
- Give input to all Marketing strategies, assets, and content to help ensure that materials are on brand and in line with Programming’s intention
- Help deliver programming information and final edited blurbs to other departments in a timely fashion, and ensure timely delivery of all programming, written, and visual information to Editorial Department for production of the printed program book (6 per year)
- Identify, develop, and manage relationships with talent guests – filmmakers, actors, writers, and VIPS – to create a frequent schedule of in-person appearances both In Theater and At Home to help drive ticket sales, viewership, and Membership sales
- Work closely with Membership team on Word of Mouth screenings, sneak previews, and special member events – to create additional rental revenue where possible – coordinating with studio, independent, Academy, Guild, and festival schedules – in an ongoing effort to help drive Membership sales and Membership retention
- Work with brands, studios, and institutions to drive and build Sponsored Screenings sales opportunities, where financial support is invested in our existing programming, or where special series are created in collaboration with a partner’s specific objectives

Metrograph is the ultimate place for movie enthusiasts to experience prestigious film and content. Metrograph represents a special, curated world of cinema, harkening back to the great New York movie theaters of the 1920s and the Commissaries of Hollywood Studio back lots, a world inhabited by movie professionals screening their work, taking meetings, watching films, and collaborating together.
Metrograph NYC, launched in 2016, is an independent movie theater at 7 Ludlow that focuses on premieres, rare archival screenings (35mm and digital), and special Q&As, for a wide spectrum of audiences, filmmakers, and communities. Metrograph NYC includes an on-site restaurant, The Commissary, and a bookstore. Metrograph At Home launched in July 2020, bringing our signature curation to a nationwide audience.
About the Position:
The Film Programmer works with the larger programming team on the curation, stakeholder relationships, print research and administration for all the film programming in theater and contribute to the film programming at home, Q&A’s and events, and printed materials. This position will focus on repertory programming.
The programming slate consists of approximately 900 titles per year (+/- 700 in theater and +/- 200 at home). A mix of repertory, new releases, and special preview screenings. This involves collaboration with film distributors, studios and rightsholders, film archives, filmmakers and producers, curators and other institutions. The role includes film programming and print research, project management, film industry liaison work and stakeholder management. The role reports to the Director of Programming.
