Located 20km west of Sydney on Dharug country, with a population of 240,000 residents, Cumberland City Council is the fourth most populous Local Government Area in Greater Sydney. ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a Fire Safety Officer to join our team!

This role will be responsible for providing Council with advice in regards to combustible cladding and fire safety compliance within the Cumberland local government area. Additionally, this role will also provide guidance and assistance to staff on interpretation of building requirements and assessment procedures.

Reporting to the Coordinator Development Programs this role will also assist in meeting Council’s statutory obligations in regard to the reporting on relevant programs and actions from Council’s Community Strategic Plan, Delivery Program and Operational Plan regarding combustible cladding and fire safety.

  • Currently accredited Building Surveyor under the NSW Building Professional board Accreditation scheme or Relevant Tertiary qualifications in fire safety and/or Building Surveying (i.e. Grad Certificate).
  • Extensive knowledge of Volume 1 & 2 (BCA) of the National Construction Code and associated Building legislation
  • Extensive knowledge of Combustible Cladding Regulation 2018
  • Extensive job-related experience in the inspection and assessment of buildings to identify the classification and use of buildings in accordance with NCC/BCA, determine what essential fire safety measure should be installed, identify any fire risks and determine course of action.
  • Extensive experience of the development and construction process as applicable to fire safety.
  • Extensive experience in Fire Safety inspections and reports
  • Extensive experience of Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 and regulations and Local Government Act, 1993
  • Extensive experience in assessing Annual Fire Safety Statement
  • Current Drivers Licence
  • Hold a current General Construction Induction Card (White Card)
  • Ability to meet deadlines on a daily basis and possession of proven time management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in issuing Development Control Orders under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act and Local Government Act 1993
  • Ability to liaise with customers.

About this role:

  • Permanent, full-time position
  • 35 hour week
  • Access to Council’s 9 day fortnight Accrued Day Off (ADO) arrangement
  • Located at Council’s Merrylands office, with frequent travel required across Council worksites, and may be required to work across any of Council’s work locations

Salary information: The salary and conditions of employment are in accordance with the NSW Local Government (State) Award.

  • Grade 13 of the Cumberland Salary Structure with a salary range of $2,040.15 to $2,346.17 per week, plus 11.5% superannuation (please note this salary range and superannuation percentage will apply from the first pay period in July 2024)
  • The commencing salary will be negotiated, taking into consideration the successful applicant’s qualifications, skills and experience related to the role
