Full job description

We are looking to recruit an endoscopy porter to join our dynamic and skilled team working in endoscopy. It is desirable that applicants have previous acute hospital setting portering experience, however full training will be given if necessary.

We are looking for a good team player, who has a willingness to learn and develop new skills.

Our endoscopy unit consists of 4 rooms . The procedures carried out are varied and include Gastroscopy, Colonoscopy, Flexible Sigmoidoscopy, PEG insertion, Endoscopic stenting and Bronchoscopy for outpatients and inpatients (when required). The unit also provides recovery facilities.

The successful candidate will be required to work 4 to 5 days a week which could include evenings and weekends.

Informal visits are welcomed.

To provide a full range of portering duties as required by the Endoscopy Department in line with all portering procedures and practices. All the duties will be managed through the Endoscopy Manager.

Responsible for equipment used in the department:

  • Trolleys;
  • Inpatient beds;
  • Scopes transportation;
  • Bleeps and radios.

No maintenance of equipment is involved.

To carry out the full range of portering duties within the endoscopy department;

Prioritise own and others workload;

Responsible for safe transportation of patient between wards/ endoscopy;

Responsible for safe collection/delivery of scopes, specimens and pharmacy as required and according to the Trust policies;

To move items of furniture/ equipment within the hospital on an ad hoc basis depending of the availability of equipment to allow safe environment;

Movement of full or empty gas cylinders, including CO2 between endoscopic rooms and storage areas and change full for empty cylinders when required;

Ensure linen and clinical and confidential waste is currently disposed as per local policy;

Ensure patient dignity is protected all the times;

In case of emergency, responsibility for collection and transfer of blood and blood products in accordance with Trust policy;

Moving and handling of patients including safe transfer and positioning – training will be provided;

Maintain effective communication links through the correct use of bleep and telephone systems using correct terminology and politeness;

When carrying bleeps respond as soon as possible to requests;

Maintain a high standard of personal appearance and hygiene at all times;

Undertake relevant training as required (initial and ongoing), including annual appraisal with a personal development plan. Training of new staff in the department when required;

Observe all departmental policies/ procedures and safe-working practices at all times;

Responsible for cleaning/ checking of wheelchairs/trolleys as necessary;
