We are looking for a Catering Assistant. This is an exciting opportunity to join Greenshaw High School and become an integral member of the Catering team.


Greenshaw Learning Trust is a highly successful multi academy trust that provides excellent quality, comprehensive, non-selective and inclusive education through primary schools and secondary schools. Greenshaw High School is committed to providing outstanding food and service to our students and other stakeholders, and our in-house Catering team are an integral part of the school’s aim to embed healthier eating habits within our students. Our Catering Assistants deliver the highest standards of food quality and service at all times within the framework and guidelines set out by the Head Chef.
Catering Assistants are accountable to the Head Chef.


The main duties and responsibilities will include:
Main Responsibilities
  • Performing general duties in the main school kitchen and other catering areas across the school (i.e. Cool Zone, Sixth Form), and in the dining areas;
  • Assisting in the preparation and cooking of school meals to the agreed standards;
  • Assisting with the service and presentation of food and beverages;
  • Assisting with the cleaning of catering areas and equipment;
  • Carrying out record keeping as necessary to ensure compliance with food safety and HACCP regulations, informing the Head Chef of any defects, hazards or food hygiene concerns relating to equipment, facilities or premises;
  • Carrying out related duties to ensure that the dining area and kitchen is in a clean and hygienic condition and that the food service is effective and efficient;
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant regulation and legislation in relation to kitchen management, food preparation and serving including Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, COSHH and HACCP.


Catering Assistant – Person Specification

Education, Qualifications and Training
1 A good standard of literacy and numeracy skills
2 Willingness to undertake induction or ongoing training
3 A food hygiene qualification (Level 2 or equivalent)
Experience and Knowledge
1 Previous experience of working successfully as part of a team
2 Previous experience of providing exceptional customer service
3 Commitment to complying with all relevant regulation and legislation in relation to kitchen management, food preparation and serving including Health and Safety, Food Hygiene, COSHH and HACCP
4 Experience of working in a busy kitchen
5 Experience of catering or a similar role in a school or similar establishment
6 Experience of working in a school environment or similar establishment
7 Experience of working with stock levels
8 Basic knowledge of Health and Safety guidelines
Aptitude and Skills
1. A passion for food and the ability to follow recipes to cook delicious and nutritious
2. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, students, parents and other visitors in a professional manner
3. Ability to work constructively as part of a team, making a positive contribution, whilst building good relationships with colleagues
4. Ability to show initiative and work under pressure, multi-task and manage time effectively
5. Ability to work flexibly to support others and respond to unplanned situations
