Job overview
We seek an enthusiastic, well-qualified teacher of English until the end of the academic year, to join our successful English, Film & Media Department and teach up to A Level.
The department is one of the most successful in the school, with progress data for GCSE putting us well into the top 15% of schools nationally. A Level results in all three subjects are also among the best in the school.
Why Chestnut Grove?
Our staff’s well-being and morale is of the utmost importance to us. We offer a comprehensive professional development programme, through the Wandle Learning Partnership which enables staff to progress professionally; many middle and senior leaders started at the school as (NQTs) ECTs. We also have ties with first-class external providers and speakers (Equaliteach, Football Beyond Borders, Imperial College, Craig Barton, Teacher Development Trust, UCL, to name but a few recent liaisons).
We promote workload reduction strategies, Diversity, Inclusion and Equality, staff autonomy and Support Staff Council (to ensure our support staff’s needs are heard and met).
We offer a broad Wellbeing Program, which includes:
- Annual ‘Nike Day’: a whole day of pampering with yoga, martial arts, art therapy, stress reduction, meditation workshops and pastoral CPD at Nike HQ
- Reflective Practice: teachers are the only profession that deals with trauma without supervision – but not at Chestnut Grove! We provide fortnightly RP sessions in which teachers can reflect and collectively problem-solve in order to develop coping strategies and improve their practice.
- Weekly yoga sessions
- Weekly staff fitness & dance session.
- Regular staff football, badminton and other sports staff elect to do
In 2019 we were awarded the Platinum Quality Mark for Professional Development and we also received the Healthy Workplace Achievement award from the Mayor of London.
The Wandle Learning Trust values the diversity of our students and is proud to inspire them through representative teaching and support staff. We aim to select all staff on merit, irrespective of race, sex, disability, age, gender reassignment, sexuality or other protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010.

Chestnut Grove is a high performing, 11-18, multi-cultural school in Balham, South London, with a number of awards for its inclusive approach including UNICEF Gold Status (2022).
Creativity underpins the vision and ethos of Chestnut Grove Academy and it is enshrined in our motto ‘A Creative Learning Community’. Underpinning our motto is our mantra ‘PROUD’ which reflects our values of Positive, Resilience, Open-minded, Unified and Determined.
Academic excellence is the foundation of a Chestnut Grove education. We achieve some outstanding examination results, with students making excellent progress at both GCSE and A Level. This has enabled a record number of our students to gain entry into the University of their choice, with many heading off to Russell Group universities including Oxbridge.
When students join Chestnut Grove they become part of a vibrant and cohesive community where the child’s social development is valued just as much as his or her academic development.
Chestnut Grove has undergone a multi-million pound building programme which has provided staff and students with modern buildings and facilities.
We are proud to be a part of the Wandle Learning Trust, a Multi-Academy Trust that builds on the success of the Wandle Learning Partnership, of which we are the lead strategic partner with Chesterton Primary School.
