Our apprenticeships combine working in a great job with training, development, and a competitive salary. You will be given dedicated time in your working week to focus on your studies. You will also have access to a network of colleagues from within the organisation and tutors to support your learning.

Public Health aims to reducing the causes of ill-health and improve people’s health and wellbeing. To help us achieve our ambitions, we are looking for an enthusiastic, motivated team player to join our Public Health team. The Public Health apprenticeship consists of a 36-month opportunity for someone starting their career in Public Health.

The role will include work across all the different aspects of Public Health. This is a varied role, and you will be undertaking a wide range of tasks, supporting the team to:

  • protect people’s health (for example action for clean air, water, food, infectious disease control or protection from environmental hazards)
  • improve people’s health (for example by helping people quit smoking or improving their living conditions)
  • ensure that our health services are effective, efficient and equally accessible
  • build the evidence base on which all public health activity is based

You will gain an understanding of the work of the team and will work in a supported learning environment. At the same time, you will work towards a nationally recognised Level 6 (undergraduate degree level) Apprentice Public Health Practitioner qualification.

To apply for this apprenticeship, you must:

  • Be an Islington resident or
  • Islington care leaver or
  • Islington school leaver in the last 12 months or
  • Be connected to Islington through completion of studies at an Islington college or university in the last 2 year

You will also need to satisfy the following course entry requirements:

  • Not already have a qualification at the same level or above in this apprenticeship subject
  • Not have extensive skills or experience in this apprenticeship subject.
  • Pass the course entry tests for example in Maths and English
  • Provide evidence that you have successfully studies at level 3 (A Levels, Access, BTEC) or equivalent, or have previous experience of working in public health
  • You will require Maths and English at level 2, grade C or above (4-9) in order to complete the course, however applications will be accepted without these qualifications and you will be supported to gain the certificates alongside the course.

Apprenticeship Start Date: January 2025

The Job – Working as a Public Health apprentice for the Council you will:

  • Support the team to deliver public health programmes and campaigns
  • Review best practice literature to make sure we deliver the best outcomes for Islington’s residents
  • Help to deliver our department’s strategic objectives such as:
    • delivering a new health and wellbeing strategy for Islington
    • embedding evidence informed practice across the council
    • tackling long term conditions, especially prevention
    • community collaboration
    • influencing all parts of the council to think about the health impacts of their work
  • Help us tackle health inequalities in the borough
  • Help analyse data to inform our decisions about what services we provide and to who

Training and Development – As part of your role you will:

  • Complete a Level 6 Public Health Practitioner apprenticeship qualification.
  • Study Maths and English if you have not already achieved a GCSE or Level 2 equivalent.
  • Participate in the Council’s apprenticeship network and various development activities.
  • Have access to a buddy/mentor.

After you have successfully completed your apprenticeship, you will have gained valuable workplace experience and attained your Level 6 qualification. This will improve your chances of finding work within the Council, with other employers or help you move on to a higher-level apprenticeship. You will be supported to meet the learning objectives which should enable you to submit a portfolio of evidence to the UKPHR to register as a UKPHR Public Health Practitioner.
